Does anyone have any ideas for family-friendly queer films, preferably relatively new? I'm working on a family movie day-type event that would be at a movie theater, etc. So, it needs to be something available on 35mm and that would be acceptable to show to young children. So far, I have Breakfast With Scot and Ready? Ok! tagged to look into. Does anyone have any other ideas?

That cheerleading movie made me think of But I'm a cheerleader. It was rated R, but I think it deserved it. It's been a while though.

I think that movie probably deserves a PG-13 -- the only thing that's sort of risque is some very brief masturbation. It's a great film, but probably a little old age-wise.

Yeah, I wasn't sure how young you meant. Above I meant to say "...I DON'T think it deserved it."

Yeah, I was hoping for something that you could take itty bitty kids to. Basically, the MPAA's systematic discrimination against gay films via ratings means that there's never a sort of "take your gay family to the movies" day, which is what I'm shooting for.

It's funny how difficult this is. I'm kind of fixating on it now. Here's some stuff from a film festival in SF, but I think it's all probably too old as well.

Those aren't too bad -- 2006, and festival films tend not to be that widely seen. I might look into Fat Girls. It might be clean enough for at least 10 and up or so, which would be pretty good.

what about Billy Elliot? I was thinking of Ma Vie En Rose, but you prob. don't want subtitles. And then I thought, what about movies about non-gender-normative identities and transgressive affections, even if they don't explicitly mention the gay? I heard Happy Feet the penguin movie did this, and Ratatouille struck me as one of the most beautiful and eloquent pro-queer movies I've seen... (To Kill A Mockingbird features characters based on Harper Lee and Truman Capote, 0 heterosexual relationships, and standing up for what's right...) BUT then I totally agree with the imperative to represent actually gay families and people at your event, too!

Yeah, part of it is that I want people to have an opportunity to see (as a family) a movie they might not have seen, so I want to avoid films that were widely distributed.

And, Ma Vie En Rose is totally something along the lines of what I'd like, but subtitles is a bit much to ask of kiddos.

I remember seeing Big Eden and thinking it was very sweet, and it is only PG 13. It is more of a general romantic comedy than kid oriented, but I remember it being very kid appropriate.

That's a great suggestion. I'll have to pre-screen all of these, of course, but that seems like a good one. I'm trying to figure out age/interest level stuff, too. This is sort of a learning process.
